Dreaming of a White... Garden Furniture

Wouldn't it be fabulous to have white cast iron garden table and chairs?? So romantic...
Back to reality, living in an ancient village filled with red earth coloured wooden houses is not quite the right surroundings for that. So far, I've managed to do with old wooden chairs that have red velvet seats. Very practical -- as soon as it starts raining the chairs must be brought in running.

Last summer, in a village party, one of my garden chairs got injured. The whole island was invited and everyone brought chairs and tables. After an afternoon of eating and drinking heartily, someone put the music on. One dancing couple - at least the heavier party - fell on one of my red velvet chairs and broke the leg. Not his, chair's, luckily.
That was not the only casualty of the evening. A plastic chair simply collapsed under an elderly sea captain as he was sitting on it, to his credit he's both tall and strongly built. Everyone was worried he should be taken ill, but no - having had enough to drink he just couldn't get to his own feet any more and as he was too heavy for anyone to carry him, had to be driven home. Which happened to be across the street, about 150 yards away.
One of the last people to leave lived a bit farther away and insisted he was fine to drive home and staggered towards his car. After a while he came back asking where the ignition was. Couldn't find it, someone must have moved it.

Well, the day I live in a French chateau it's time for those white iron beauties...

Haaveilua kalusteista

Tuttavieni puutarhassa on ihanat, valkoiset valurautakalusteet - aah, miten ylellistä! Romanttisesta nyt puhumattakaan.

Puutarhakalustetilanteeni on varsin huonolla tolalla, sama vika kuin suutarin lapsilla. Ne isoäitini Elsan tuolit odottavat maalausta. Sellaiset rustiikkiset, yksinkertaiset vanhanajan tuolit varmaan sopivat parhaiten tänne Ahvensaaren vanhaan kylämiljööseen. Valurautaiset olisivat liian fiinit!

A bit of history

Elna's childhood home

The fisherman Lundel built the old house in the background for his family in 1870. Algot built the yellow house after the war.

The famous veranda

Algot, the former owner of my house and the last in a line of Lundels and then Erikssons who had bought and built the plot of land, was a colourful character. A boxer, fisherman and an unbeatable drinker, in his older days he used to rush out into the garden with a gun in his hand to ward off little green men.
“When strolling on the village road”, a friend said, “and the evening sun lit the veranda from behind, you could see Algot’s silhouette as he was practising boxing with a sand bag. A glorious sight.” This he did until very old – he reached 82 years, a respectable age considering his drinking habits.
Once Algot was cleaning a revolver in his kitchen (and drinking with a mate) as the gun accidentally fired and hit the crotch of the other man. Promptly he ran outdoors and took his trousers off to check the damage. Algot followed, his face grey. “Miraculously, there was blood but no real damage. And anyway, I already had four kids by then”, the guy now counts.
Algot’s mother Elna was a fisherman’s daughter from the nearby island of Hevonkack. She was a seamstress and received numerous love letters from a young sailor, Gunnar Eriksson - Algot's father - who kept sending his “little friend” notes from all over the world. Sweetly, the last of the letters is addressed to his “little wife”. This is in 1912. The letters were stored in a box of rags in the attic and found completely accidentally by me as I was looking for some fabric to repair the upholstering of one of the old chairs. Amazingly, there was a piece of exactly the same red velvet that was just big enough for the job, amongst a squirrel’s nest, acorns and love letters.
Being curious, I made a little expedition to Hevonkack to see the house where Elna as a young woman received all these letters. It is a slightly older house than mine (which is built by another sailor, Algot’s grandmother’s father, in 1870). The current owners of the Hevonkack house bought it directly from Elna’s family. They have done a good job restoring the house, with most of the exterior done by now.
In front of the house I discovered what I was looking for: the same old peony that has been planted in the border in front of my house. Elna had brought something of her childhood home to her marriage, along with her sewing machine and all those letters.

Viljon marraskuun fanikirje

Hei, Minä täällä.
No niin!

Viljo

Hi it's Me Viljo.

People keep asking me for an autograph. Personally I think a view of my paw is a lot better. I've been working on my toe hair for the winter as you can see. You humans are so far behind when it comes to evolution. Not to mention dogs. They still haven't figured out that soft, clean paws are always welcome to bed.
Now I know you are dying to press your cheek against my warm paw; and to everyone's delight my secretary is currently developing a giant paw pillow for Christmas. It will have my signature scent and it will also start purring when talked to in a soft voice, just like me.

Marjoja notkuen

Berries big time
They say that great big grapes of rowanberries signify a coming cold winter. That the birds would need a lot of food this year, and that Mother Nature knows it. Whatever the reason, the abundance of berries this autumn is generous.
The deer and raccoon dogs have marked the heavy, pending brances of my apple tree, too. The fruit and leaves have been eaten to a deer's reach, and the raccoon dog excrements reveal feasts of apples.
