Great... woodpeckers and apples

Great spotted woodpecker, käpytikka

Old 'Åkerö' apples are maturing into sweet red-cheeked beauties. The only thing is, I don't like apples. Childhood overdose accompanied by "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" remarks from my dad. He was right, of course, but still... they were bitter and sour. If only mum could make them into baked or pie form...

Now I have an old apple tree in front of my house and its apples are relatively sweet. To top that, the tree is an old variety, valuable and pretty. I still don't get to pick them

Fortunately someone else does. Great spotted woodpecker, a young specimen, is enthusiastically picking into the juicy fruit and sampling the fruit flesh. You can nearly hear the hums of approval. And I get to admire the bird from my kitchen table. I'd call this a win-win.

The woodpecker's beak is made for pecking apples.

Red flax in my dry border.

Naapurin ihastuttava kukkaketo. Lea's new border.

Loppukesällä kukkamaa on näyttänyt kyntensä.

Ah yes ... the translation
Forgive me for never having the patience to interpret, translate, word by word! Once I've written it's done, no need to rewrite. No need to me, that is. Self-centeredness at its worst.

The news is, I just read in a paper that "homing" is the trend. Home-making, decorating, baking, whatever makes the home feel more like home.

Is that news? Was there ever a trend for making home feel like a hotel, train wagon or a waiting room? Whatever the reasoning, my home extends, and has always done so, farther beyond the walls. Idling in the garden beats vacuum cleaning every time. Afternoon sun on red flax flowers, that's a fleeting moment waiting to be discovered. Feet carry me on, past the dry border across the village street to the neighbour's. There's a real feast for the eyes.

Lea sowed those seeds - poppies, calendulas and corn flowers - in the spring and all June we wondered whatever happened to them. Night frosts and unnatural cold, that's what happened. In late summer the border has sprung to life. Homing.

Kesän tili

Kuvassa riisuttu hirsitalo ja ovensuussa emäntä itse.
Old cladding and rotten veranda have been taken off... The pile of earth and stone is the old floor insulation.

Remontti on tältä kesältä pistetty pakettiin. Pojat vaihtoivat ansiokkaasti taloon uudet alimmat hirret niihin kohtiin mihin tarvittiin, kaivoivat multapenkkaperustuksia pois, purkivat lahon kuistin, ottivat säästöön lattiat, ovet, ikkunat ja listat ja pistivät lopuksi talon tuulensulkupaperipakettiin. Nyt minulla on pakettitalo!

Vanhat, paikoitellen pintalahot hirret tarvitsevat säänsuojaa, ettei laho etene.

Bottle Mail

Recently, I've been emptying the old house's attic. It's a long business.

There are numerous letters from a hundred years ago, hand-written in ink and sent from neighbouring islands as well as across the Atlantic. One must read them, of course.

Then there are ice skates. Old blades, hand-smithed, that were attached to the shoes. There are decoy duck holders, fabric meters, shoes, oil lamps and a geography book from 1905.

And there are bottles. Old medicine bottles, lemonade bottles, whisky bottles, pressed apple juice bottles. There is a bottle that still contains a drop of "all-purpose-oil" that suited boots and sewing machines alike. There is a bottle of "Sloan's Liniment" complete with an instruction leaflet. There is a fish-liver oil bottle bearing a hand-written label from Korpo Apotek.

Old bottles make a beautiful collection. But when there are 200 bottles? Even more?
I'm not finished with that attic yet.

Those letters, naturally they include love letters. There is a certain young lady who has received ardent confessions from a total of four suitors during 1920's. She was born in what is now my older house and thought best to leave her collection buried in the layers of sawdust under the attic floor.

Two of her admirers were sailors and have sent their sentiments across oceans. One particular admirer, Johannes, seems to be sorry for having gone a bit too far in their last meeting but promises to take responsibility for what may come after. "But", he says, "no need to worry", he doesn't think there is any reason to.(!)
I blushed reading these lines!
In Johannes's next letter, a few months later, he laments not having heard anything from his sweetheart. "You must have found another one", he concludes with a broken heart. Little does he know she has three other ones!
Later, she married one of the sailors.

Pullopostia

Vanhan talon ullakon tyhjennys on hidasta puuhaa. Pulloja löytyy - likööri-, omenamehu-, lääke- ja öljypulloja. Löytyy kalanmaksaöljypullo, jossa on käsin musteella kirjoitettu etiketti Korppoon apteekista.

Harvoissa nimittäin on mitään etikettiä jäljellä.

Punainen suloinen keijunkukka kohoaa keltaisten niittyleinikkien keskeltä.

Selective weeding

I like surprising combinations
, like the shock pink and purple of Tanacetum coccineum and Allium 'Purple Sensation'. Add the yellow centres and it's a feast.
Also, I like surprises in form of weeds. Yes, weeds! Quite a few of them have a lot to give: Hypericums, Filipendulas and Geraniums add little splashes of colour. With the coral red Heuchera and lilac Alliums I let yellow buttercups grow freely. Only when they invade too much space is their time to go - but they always come back next year.
One of my favourite June weed is red campion, Silene dioica. With the blue spires of Polemonium caeruleum, who can tell which one is a "decorative plant"?

140 years of living revealed

The workmen taking off an in-built bench to be conserved. Smartly, the seat can be drawn out to make two wide beds. The topmost wallpaper layer is a pretty blue-flowered print on off-white background, supposedly from 1930's. The panelling below is painted pale blue and skirting is dark blue. The dado rail is dark stained wood as is the panelled ceiling, very typical for the late 19th century.

Renovating an old house is rewarding and shattering at the same time. To be able to live in the house, and for the house to be able to live on for another century and more, some interventions are necessary.

On the uphill side, the lowest timber logs need to be replaced. For that, the wooden cladding needed to be taken off and the interior panelling and wallpapering peeled. Only then can one see the condition of the wood.
It feels like vandalism to take off 9 layers of wallpaper, each having been lovingly glued to refresh and renew the house. Lovingly is a supposition, there may have been damp marks and coffee spills.
Three wallpaper layers were found atop the existing panelling. Under that, three more or so. The wallpaper pattern seems to have varied a bit around the room. Under those supposed last layers was a heavier paper that has been wetted and nailed into place, as traditionally was done to prime the wallpapering.
But underneath that, three more traces of age old wallpaper. That raises a question: since from their marks it is obvious the timber logs were brought from another building - they last an age, so naturally all logs were reused as long as they lasted - were these fragments already in the previous building?
We may never know the answer. But one things is certain. Tomorrow I'm off to a bookstore to acquire the just published book on Finnish wallpaper history.

One of the oldest wallpapers is an ultramarine geometric pattern. Notice the moss that was added between log layers.

This one seems hand-printed: the black is slightly off the red pattern. It is remarkably different from the geometric blue print!

Nytpä on asiaa kirjakauppaan heti huomenaamulla. Suomalainen tapettikirja, Suomalaisen kirjallisuuden seuran kustantama, on juuri ilmestynyt!

Daffodil time

Knowing the British daffs have been way past their best for a while, it's time to introduce some that are currently blooming in my garden...
